The western imperial project

Formal imperialism became unpopular during the first half of twentieth century and nearly disappeared during the second half. " DK

Formal imperialism had been technically quite unpopular, even in some so called enlightened Great Power noble circles, since before 1760; and, needless to say, was highly unpopular with the non noble American rebel colonists of 1776, and still later with the ignoble French Jacobins with whom the likes of Jefferson identified, etc.

It was about this time that the very concept of modern popularity or unpopularity, as distinct from the ancient Roman concept based on Roman city state citizenship, first emerged.

"The great empires of the British, French, and eventually the Portuguese were given their independence." DK

Although the Great Powers had been tending, based on their own liberal domestic policy agendas, toward giving them up for decades, since the 19th Century, WWII, and American demands, together, forced the West to abruptly de imperialize.

This really spelled the final doom of the West, but that is very hard for most people to see now. The liberal blinders are so strong.
