It seems to me that the evidence we have for Neanderthal intermingling, as well as say pygmies, leprechauns of folklore, etc, indicate a long period of intermingling.
The larger hominids did not always simply eat the smaller ones, it seems.
After all, we still have dwarfs and pygmies. Maybe we have leprechauns. I am rather a Neanderthal.
