This a fascinating point; realize that testosterone levels have been declining in America since the early 1980's, more or less commensurate with the decision by elites to began off-shoring heavier industry, while also raising immigration levels into America, which causes the average person to do less physical labor (immigrants end up doing a lot of the house keeping, grounds keeping, construction work, agriculture work etc., whereas in the 1950's and 60's Americans were more skilled and industrious at doing this work themselves).
Time spent on manual labor, active leisure, performing physical feats to impress friends and lovers, etc. appears to have decreased for the average American since the early 1980's. What's risen dramatically, instead? Time spent watching TV, playing video games, reading/staring at screens for other purposes, staying indoors in general (often for the ostensible purpose of avoiding a crime-ridden outside world).
Jonathan Haidt says that research indicates that people born after 1994 appear to be incredibly soft and sensitive, emotionally speaking, because when they grew up adults often did not allow young children to play and interact without supervision. Normally, kids are supposed to figure out how to handle difficult and complex situations on their own, to some degree. But adults, having been frightened by the media and pop culture that the world is too dangerous for their kids to interact with safely, have attempted over and over again to monitor and regulate the childhood of Millennials and Gen Z. But Haidt says that people born after 1994 are particularly weak because they became teenagers when everyone had smart phones and social media accounts. Girls in particular are struggling with the neverending stream of information available on their phones, which makes them anxious that they aren't as pretty or popular as other people. All the screen time and omnipresent supervision by adults has made it difficult for this youngest generation to develop normal social and coping skills. Haidt likens the emotional sensitivity of the youngest generation to an allergy; what happens to people who aren't exposed to certain substances when they're young? Their bodies freak out due to allergy when they finally are exposed to something years later.
Anyway, several years ago the army began publicly acknowledging that Millennials are far more out of shape and weak than previous generations of youths, which is causing many people to fail basic military tests of physical conditioning. The armed services essentially admitted that America is in a public health crisis WRT obesity and sedentary lifestyles among the young. Of course, these modern trends have also affected older generations, but the difference is that young Boomers were trim and strong, while young Gen X-ers were doing pretty well in the 80's.

Could the truth of the whole be somehow encased in the fragments, all of them, or only some of them, if so which fragments of truth contain a microcosm of the whole truth, and which do not, or none after all?
All fragmentary causes are good, and any fragmentary cause is good, if you feel loyal to it. All fragmentary causes you feel loyal to at any particular moment are good.
You can't shake a stick at all the causes invoking loyalty. There are many thousands.
The world is littered with them.
Being loyal to loyalty is rather like swearing an oath to kill death, as the young rioters in the Pardoner's Tale did.
Here Brooks is just badly squibbing others ostensibly smarter than he.
It would be child's play to pick at this tissue, but why bother, composed as it is with the likes of James, and especially Royce?
Perhaps a reference to the theological, rather than secular, origins of what is still called liberalism, since Brooks raises the bugbear of loyalty, in the abstract?

My rejoinder would be that they each tend to take over power, in both parties simultaneously, at the top, out of all proportion to their numbers in the total population.
Liberal Catholics and Jews have tended in recent years to run the Democratic Party, Orthodox Jews and conservative Catholics, the Republican.
Hetereodox white protestants, of all stripes, are their stooges.

LINCOLN, ALSO JEFFERSON MADISON CLAY, WAS AND REMAINED A COLONIZATIONIST

As I have pointed out here, his whole political career resonated with this colonization theme.
Emancipation during the Civil War, without having first placed immediate colonization plans on a firm and agreed political footing, especially within his own party, was Lincoln's own special personal blunder, among other really big ones.
My suspicion is that the only way he might have gotten cooperation for such plans in our fragmented system, was to have threatened to halt the war, in its very midst, declare an armistice, treaty agreeing to secession, or something else, unless an agreed, firmly established, and multi year plan for colonization were first hammered out by Congress and agreed by him.
The other huge point to make (Clausewitz or whatever):
Why even embark on a war which, even if you quote ' win ', you cannot then achieve the outcome (colonization) which you most intended to achieve? See George Julian's remark, Magness and Page, p 109, re if he had known colonization would not work whether his preliminary notice to the rebels would have been given.
After all, Lincoln had won the war, before he was killed, yet no colonization plan, whatsoever, worthy of the name had ever been firmly put in place and agreed by Congress.
In fact, the opposite was where it stood when he died.
Further, the decision to recruit blacks as Union soldiers violated Lincoln's own principles, and made the whole project for colonization difficult to carry forward. By the end of the war, there were about 100,000 of these, who had been armed.
Lincoln expressed concern that these freed trained and armed ex slaves might then go back into the south and commence a race war there. One wonders why he didn't think of these things before that time.
Nevertheless the Civil War outcome was nothing whatever like what he had hoped for:
