So, why have all these paranoid conservative whites been so heavily arming themselves in recent years, really for the last 20 or 30 years?

People like Vann Woddard, on the so called left, blind economic forces.., segregation wasn't inevitable... things like that...
He gets attacked by the new left (and probably especially also black power) and he suddenly goes conservative.
He started out writing about events only after Reconstruction. Kindof an easy way out, wouldn't you say?
