What a sad, long forgotten, episode in American intellectual life!
Marcuse, Wilhelm Reich (maybe Robert's great uncle?)....
One Dimensional Man, Eros and Civilization, The Function of the Orgasm, nonsense like that. I was an authority. What a lot of ridiculous hooey, in retrospect: the ideal, a free play of faculties among an enormous number (6 billions) of good equally poor but happy joyous godless people the world over.
At least with, say, Freud, one didn't have a double dimension whacko whammy! With the Freudian Left, you had layers....
It was way to the left of, say, Popper, The Open Society and Its Enemies...(but with Plato, a conservative, you nevertheless had a sort of ancient Greek twist on what the Freudian Left called the free play of faculties!)
I had already read all the important Ayn Rand, on the right, before then, say age 17, so I was well equipped to banter with either side on something more than an equal footing....
