So what was the Crimean War all about?
It reads like a bad fairy tale: It began as a dispute between Orthodox and Catholic clerics over control of shrines in Jerusalem, etc.
France and Russia each backed their own clerics against the others.
The Turks, by then weak and degenerate, who owned the land by long past conquest long before the abortive Crusades, and who cared nothing about this dog of a Christian infidel quarrel, backed each side in turn.
That's it.
