Few American Presidential leaders, virtually none, have been like Trump.
It comes as a surprise, in a way, because he represents in some ways widely held American ideals.
But they are ideals Americans don't want to see in their President so much as in themselves.
The President most like Trump, for me, may be Teddy, but he was very different in so many ways. They do seem to share similar moments of opportunity and hazard in American history.

Interestingly enough, Krugman, of all people, seems to share my analogy, whether it turns out to mean anything real or not:
"Even now, it’s hard to think of many politicians willing to be anywhere near as forthright as Teddy Roosevelt was about the dangers to democracy posed by vast inherited wealth.
The question is whether the Trump phenomenon will reopen that door...."
