RE BOBBITT'S STATES OF TERROR VERSUS STATES OF CONSENT

"The mainspring of popular government in time of revolution is both virtue and terror... Terror is nothing but justice,... the principle of democracy, applied to the pressing needs of the country." Robespierre

See Palmer The Struggle, p 124, comparing the ideals of Adams and Robespierre.

Adams had had an idyllic situation, the Powers had been on his side, against England.

Robespierre did not, the Powers had united against revolutionary France.

So, why had the powers been for the revolutionary colonials, but against revolutionary France?

Good question.

Why was Thomas Paine put in Prison by Robespierre's government? Good question.
