I LIKE TO ALLUDE TO THE EUROPEAN WARS OF RELIGION FOR THIS ONE:

 

Widespread iconoclasms of the Wars of Religion, throughout Europe, Protestants, of all stripes, destroying thousands and thousands of Catholic works of art, everywhere, for decades.

 

A very ancient Hebrew impulse, then Luther's, in origin...

Call it, Protestantism, perhaps, an Anti Renaissance, or Counter Renaissance, impulse, followed, of course, by a Counter Reformation, or Counter Renaissance, or whatever.
