While I think the EU was a mistake, it seems to me that the situation has changed somewhat less than one might otherwise think, from that of 1800, when Napoleon and the German states were duking it out in Middle Europe, except that Britain is a mere phantom of its former self, now supplanted by the US, and France a nothing.
In 1800 neither Britain nor Russia, the two flanking super powers, around continental Europe, could give a good goddamn about the concept Europe or of the West.
FDR proved that he had much the same view, way before 1945.
