There were really only three things that saved us:
1. Our lucky geographic isolation from Europe.
2. Our lucky richness in territorial expansion possibilities.
3. The weakness, and or opportunism elsewhere, of the European powers, lucky for us, not something we could have either planned or brought about ourselves at all.
If we are talking about the American Rebellion itself, there was really only one thing that saved us: the declaration of war, by other imperial powers, on our side, against Britain, as a result of their seeing the opportunities of the American Rebellion to weaken a rival imperial power which only recently had brought them to their knees in The Seven Years War.
The last thing on the minds, of either France or Holland, at that time, was to champion the cause of the American rebels for its own sake.
As a cause, it was inimical to their old european order mentality, and frankly to their domestic political interests. The French and Dutch revolutions were still over a decade away.
