He says go shopping for democracy.
Sounds great to you, right?
Where does the shopping money go?
Mainly to big companies not in nonurban areas.
Why have local media shrunk or disappeared?
Is it merely the change in the local media business model, or is there some connection between the local media business model and local commercial, industrial, and investment models, versus global media and nonmedia business models that have also put them, both media and nonmedia locals, out of business?
So when you consume to subsidize global markets, you further shrink local American businesses and markets and also their media outlets. It is not the most direct connection, but it is there.
So when he says go shopping for democracy to subsidize local democracy, think about what he means.
The NYT has always been most interested in so called LIEO global democracy, for which Black Friday is a symbol. That brand of democracy cares nothing for American local democracy, but rather for democracy in other countries as a global ideology, at bottom a global marketing free trade ideology.
