Whites gradually melted together.
It didn't happen over night or even in a few decades.
Even Catholics and Jews were melted together in the end, somewhat. The country club I grew up in had begun to accept Ccatholics. That for them was a big deal. They rejected Jews for the duration of my youth. Negroes were out of the question. They wouldn't let Arthur Ashe even briefly practice there (much less join the club), for the Masters, played elsewhere in town, in the 60s.
What didn't happen very much was melting together of these gradually melting together whites with either negroes or latinos. Some melting happened, but not a lot.
What happened eventually has aptly been called white flight from urban areas to suburban ones.
The Mexicans aren't melting at all baby. Negroes aren't melting into Mexicans, latinos aren't melting into Mexicans. Whites certainly aren't melting into Mexicans.
And vice versa. Mexicans aren't melting into anybody else anytime soon, except maybe in SNL The Californians.
