I started thinking about these problems, just recently.
I am sure there are experts on it.
There were once such things, or at least aspects of things, characterized as natural monopolies, based on geography, scale, etc. There are many, no doubt, in such industries themselves, who will tell you that it is as true today as it once was, but I wonder...
Another thing that occurred to me, something which few in any industry intent on corporate growth as an ideal are perhaps willing to admit, that the very march of technology may have in some ways rendered obsolete such notions as scale economies, at least for certain industries, products, and certain aspects of those industries.
Vertical integration may be another thing which no longer holds quite the place it once did, once again for technological reasons.
if you reflect long on the alternatives to what I am suggesting, then get ready for the continued consolidation and cartello-monopolization of all industries, across national and civilizational borders, the true globalization which Western Civilization liberal thought has long desired.
