They were mild Europhiles, only at the top, at certain points, Peter the Great etc., but it never really took.
They always, geographically and culturally and civilizationally, had one foot in East Asia, and another foot down into and through the Middle East, and the fourth foot into the Indian Hindu subcontinent...
So they are not merely a binary torn country, in Huntington's sense re Eastern Europe, but rather a sort of four footed, LGBT, transgender, quartertorn civilizational freak of nature.
They don't know who the hell they are, and will never, really, be able to find out, unfortunately.
America, from the beginning, has been going down a similar mjultitorn nihilistic path, but based on helter skelter colonial development and radical democratic ideology rather than geopolitical situs and long cross culture war history.
