If one looks back at the high tide of early Whiggism, it was even claimed that monopolies were outlawed by Magna Carta as violating the liberties of the common man, a view certainly never envisioned by the drafters of that document. This was the position, however, of Coke in opposition, and apparently of Trump right now.
