Ever since 1800, with the Election of Jefferson, America became permanently committed to global proselytyzing against strong, or hierarchical, governments, of every kind or quality whatsoever, strong religious beliefs or discrimination of any kind, and generally against trade restrictions or preferences, anywhere in the world.
There have been periods of isolationism, strategic and security concerns, and protectionism or favoritism, for example, in trade matters, but they have been criticized above all for the above reason, regardless of whether there have been other, and better, reasons for isolation, protection, favoritism, or whatever, in every case.
