This is one of the most vexed topics I can think of ,for citizens of the West.
So many European states dispensed with their elites during the Democratic Revolution; and although many of them returned, that status within society was not fully reestablished after the Napoleonic Wars, that it is difficult to describe, except only as vague remarks regarding the situation that emerged there.
Over here, we jetissoned any vestige of aristocracy or nobility in 1776, almost none of which had ever set foot over here in the first place, although a few of them owned substantial tracts, and they all were governed by the Crown, certain nobles, or trading or religious organizations companies under charters.
