The biggest threat is the one we have already long pushed and enabled them into, ever since we left them, still intact in Asia as well, for the last century: ever closer ties with China.
Had we dismembered them in 1918, when we had the chance and the crying need, an alliance of China with the Asian East Russian Rump would make sense, and even be reasonable now.
