It makes the most sense to me to turn the thinking about the hamburger in a certain direction.
 
It is not the traditional one. Traditionally, one thought of the hamburger as more or less plain ground meat, cooked, to which is added various condiments and embellishments externally. Of course there is also the bun...
 
Try to think instead of a hamburger as a thing capable of an infinite variety of internal ingredients, spices, minced vegetables, herbs, sauces, fillers, etc.
 
Think of it, in short, as a sort of generic fried or broiled pate, or meat loaf in American English, which can be prepared for cooking in an infinite variety of ways.

It is called a hamburger patty, after all. A hamburger patty is in form a flattened unsheathed sausage.

Pate is another word for unsheathed sausage.

Link versus patty also expresses the distinction.
