What is particularly interesting is the reason why we must “prevent undue Chinese penetration and subsequent influence in Indochina”. The reason is “so that the peoples of Indochina will not be hampered in {7} their natural developments by the pressure of an alien people and alien interests”.
I am not a fan of Chomsky, leftism, or Asian, Chinese, or Indochinese Development, of any kind, really.
The reasoning of the policy is what is of special interest here:
The reason is “so that the peoples of Indochina will not be hampered in {7} their natural developments by the pressure of an alien people and alien interests”.
This was a frankly racist West playing a Wilsonian self determination race card among Asian races.
We need to get Vox in here, and someone like say
Dylan Matthews to step in here and set us straight on what this recent history means NOW.
