Britain should never have fought WWI, but the British liberal political background, and political runup to it, made its entry inevitable.
In many ways, it was merely the continuation of a long held, feckless, unhelpful, and unsympathetic attitude toward Europe. Unfortunately it was also against Britain's best interests and fought on the side of France, its hereditary enemy, and Russia, its deep rival for control of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and India.
John Charmley, great stuff!
