RE KRUGMAN TODAY A SICK FEELING: PATIENT DYING OF CONSUMPTION CARTOON

He's got one thing right, we are long past needing help. When your Congress cares about reducing taxes on the rich, but not about the rest, you have a prescription for the '1789' situation. Schama apparently saw it this way, somewhat, also.

Mise en scene for a cartoon:

Picture e.g. one of Daumier's medical themes, the emaciated elderly patient (Uncle Sam) is in bed in a garret, being ministered to by two physicians, one's smock reads Monetarist/Keynesian, the other, the Fed/Circulatory Specialist.

The plump elderly wife is standing anxiously by. Dino the dog, emaciated, empty bowl, sleeping fitfully at the foot of the bed.

The caption above reads: "Structural Problems";

the one below, the economist physician speaks to her:

"I am afraid it is 'consumption'.
There is very little we can do at this point.
He will never return to equilibrium."

Indicating his partner, "He already tried a transfusion, without success.'
