Re What makes a nation?
I think that The Nation of Israel, from the dawn of recorded history forward, is the locus classicus.
All the best
In the archaic human world, which went on for hundreds of thousands of years, it wasn't yet nations, but group 'self' determinations, at the point of an arrow or spear, or the thick end of a club.
Groups could be very small, or quite large, in archaic human times.
Their members were not on equalitarian social footings, hunter gatherers or not, contrary to Reich, Wade, and others', dicta.
