 This work, just started, does have warts of course:

"...and only a refusal to take politics seriously allowed this to pass unchallenged." p. 9

The bulk of American politics falls victim to his general critique here, but he attributes the narrowness of Whig American politics, which Americans all take deadly seriously, as if it were merely a failure to take politics seriously. 

The problem, rather, among others, is that Americans no longer have any concept of politics whatsoever other than those post-Lockean ones of representative democracy: expanding and rationalizing the franchise, party bureaucracy reform, party seat counts in legislatures, benches, and Congress, party Court appointments , and what not.
