Wade asserts at several places that hunter gatherers were strictly egalitarian and non hierarchical.
He does not cite any clear evidence for this thesis, although he refers vaguely to existing hunter gatherer groups. p. 128
It runs directly contrary to his accounts elsewhere of hierarchy, both within clans and tribes of chimps, from which the branch of archaic chimp like hominids leading ultimately to humans had diverged 5 M years ago, but also among populations of archaic humans. It is deeply counterintuitive for many reasons.
I see no reason to believe that he is correct.
