At the time of this 1971 interview, McCarthyism had long been discredited, although much of what it was based on in the first place had been even truer than the hamfisted McCarthy knew.
That has only come out in recent years, that not only was the CPUSA heavily under the control of Soviet illegals, but also that some of the very highest federal posts both here and in Britain before and during WWII had been manned by Soviet agents. See Andrew, The Secret World, McCarthy; The Haunted Wood, several Venona books, Stalin's Secret Agents, In Denial.
Re Sander's trip to Moscow as Burlington Mayor, 1988, how was this not a violation of the Logan Act? The Logan Act, though a crazy act to interpret, is certainly a magic line:
He wrote that Burlington, a city of about 40,000, had a foreign policy because, “I saw no magic line separating local, state, national and international issues . . . How could issues of war and peace not be a local issue?” Bernie Sanders
This may be the only clearcut violation of the Act I have noticed, although it is violated routinely by hundreds every day. This, however, is glaring and in your face Logan Act stuff.
