You can only do research and development that makes sense when you can control your production process, your market, legally, your internet security, and exclude your attacker copycat competition. Even licensing is a pig in a poke nowadays the way it is violated.
Most companies have concluded that it is better to steal someone else's new products than develop them. That is the lesson of attacker globalization.
The West is as little able to protect its celebrities and public figures from the media and the public as it is to enforce property rights for its intellectual property or process technology.
