This is Brooks at his best, which is as a terrible, cunning, elusive, pundit doing his worst.
At least one has the satisfaction here, seldom seen, of Brooks admitting that he had been wrong about something, and by implication, about a lot of very important other things connected with it, for his whole life.
The temptation is to unpack this monster of erudition line by line.
