That turned out, for many, white or negro, to be the American dream, bad as it was, the other thing was worse.
That was what was meant by a land of opportunity, in the first instance, back then. It wasn't about prosperity, making a fortune, for most all of them. It was about getting to a bad place, a hard place, but better place than they had left, or were transported from as slaves.
Picture, for a moment, the plight of the negro slaves who weren't transported to America.
Zero of them had a snowball's chance in hell to end up a Sally Hemings, or those like her, and descendants, back in fricking Congo, or any, any other Africa states!
ZERO!
In places like Africa, they would have been killed or eaten by other negroes!
Slavery was too good for them, and not feasible for them, in Africa.
Call it Jungle Economics, a favorite Krugman topic.
Africa had what Adam Smith or Ricardo or Keynes or Krugman or Piketty would call a comparative advantage in negro slave labor.
An economist worth his salt, even Thurow, would have said, looking back, putting themselves in those 18th century shoes:
Why fight it? It's an iron law of the market!
It is not about ethics, or candy ass Christian morality!
If they had been worth more to their African owners, trust me, they would have kept their slave asses there!
These bitches aren't grateful.
