That is why the overwhelming majority of Republicans who elected Lincoln were also not root and branch abolitionists at all. In fact, the opposite.
Abolitionists were whackos who demanded immediate emancipation and the elimination of slavery everywhere in the world, regardless of any consequences, regardless of property rights or racial consequences.
Many of those closest to Lincoln were abolitionists, including his long time law partner. It was political suicide, however, to admit any such view, and that is why the Republican Party in general, and Lincoln in particular, danced all around this issue, and why their adversaries, especially Douglas, tried to draw out their true colors for their average Republican victims to see.
