The media has promoted bashing of everything else but it, since the beginning really. That includes violent reactions to media so called reporting.
They feed on sensationalism, and only secondarily on what they choose to call truth, which is their special ideology, not truth.

Local governments, having their foibles rammed up their tight local asses, in a thousand places and in a thousand ways weekly.
Things like that. NYT is a long past master of stuff like this.
Some times they have made it up from whole cloth, like the Kitty Genovese Affair in NYC.
