Political instability was already well under way in Britain in the 17th Century. The enlightenment fanned these flames.
The American rebellion was another great power conflict, close on the heels of the Seven Years War which had permanently crippled France.
France's defeat in the Seven Years brought on a crisis that had been building there. Enlightenment thinking fueled the crisis of 1789, as well as elsewhere in Europe before that time.
The Enlightenment thus set the stage for The Disastrous Age of the Democratic Revolution.
The shockwaves and ramified political and social transformations from this Revolution have ultimately killed off the West as a Civilization.
