Cecil Rhodes imported a huge number of Chinese and Indian coolies into South Africa, I think it was before 1900, no harm no foul, free contract labor, long after the time Dylan Matthews says Britain nevertheless had turned its head resolutely against negro slavery, back around 1830, way ahead of America......
Enslaving negroes not the same thing as impressing coolies under slave conditions in southern Africa (not even enough negroes for all the hard labor down there)....
Well then, why didn't we do it in California, a place crying out for very cheap labor, of any color, it seems.
California, and Washington, just barely resisted the pull, right during the Civil War!
