They often did not enslave, or even merely kill them.
They ate them. All of them, unless a neighboring tribe had already eaten too many of them, in which case they enslaved women who need not be eaten at that time. They could always be eaten later.....
In this way they didn't get into inter tribal discussions of differences, different witch doctors, different chiefs' lineages, rituals, you name it, differences.
They were hungry, mad, desperate, fearful, proud, and small.
