The received wisdom was, and probably still is, that you get convicted, next time...
The head of the sex crimes division handled the case...
We found out there was only one hold out in our favor, out of six. Very bad sign, to say the least.
The next time, a few months later, he was found not guilty...
It was a kind of Kismet.
