That, however, was what the Constitution had actually meant. Taney had been correct in Dred Scott, and even a liberal like Bobbitt grudgingly acknowledged that. Thank god for small favors from Bobbitt.

Lincoln's was, quite frankly, already by the 1850s,  a blatant, and quite common, Whig Interpretation of American History.
