I didn't read Brooks' article....I did read DK's...
Is this sudden saving burst a burst among politicians qua intellectuals?
Is it among right wing think tank types?
is it among NYT Republican pundits, eg Brooks, Kristol, etc.?
Is it among conservative academic political scientists?
Is it among average American citizens, as sudden intellectuals?
Do you think any of these folks, here in America, or some or all of them together, qualify as bona fide intellectuals?
Why am I asking you?
Following Hofstadter, do you think Brooks might be mistaking mere intelligence (albeit of a rather low order) with something actually intellectual?

See DK's current post, re Hofstadter's books, especially Anti Intellectualism in American Life, but also the other one, and my comment. See also his conclusion. Surprisingly, his conclusion differs from Brooks'.
I can often count on Brooks to put his foot in intellectual dog poop at just the right moment somehow!
