One might also note that there are perhaps similar ethnic subtexts to each story (not the Jewett Story, which is about sensationalistic fictionalization, and other things, in Starr's account): that gentile multiculturalist culture is soulless, shallow, heartless, and artless, by contrast with Jewish community norms.
