Let's say the right wing burger is a sort of bacon velveeta cheese or Tex Mex chiliburger whopper, with catsup, and all the fixings, on a big white bread toasted bun.
The left wing burger is, say, a broiled portobello mushroom, or say a veggie burger (remember the sawdust litigation?), tofu, or chicken breast, burger with say sprouts, tahini and or hummus spread on pita.
Either of these parties' burgers is pretty goddamned disgusting.

Grayling wrote a short book on Wittgenstein which I read about 35 years ago now.
We have been in such a developing, or emerging, or perhaps better, long evolving, post-truth world for a very long time.
In some ways, it has been since the beginning, 450 BC; in others, only some hundreds of years.
What is called relativism is an old concept.

THE WHIG INTERPRETATION OF EUROPEAN NATIONALISM
For the Whig historian, the good nationalism was the French, the bad was the German.

RE THE NEW DEAL OF WORLD TRADE
The New Deal of World Trade article makes some points I have discussed often in the past.
Few people nowadays pay any attention to this most important of developments in American foreign policy.
It has had a profound impact on what occurred simultaneously, The New Deal.
Most Americans blame the ills of globalization on Republican tax breaks for the wealthy starting with Reagan in 1980.
The big problems for the American middle and lower so called classes, and for the American people as a nation, had started much earlier, in 1930, had been caused by policies other than lower taxes for the wealthy, had been implemented primarily by Democrats, had coincided closely with, and were actually camouflaged by, the New Deal itself, and then spectacularly, by WWII.
The recovery that was lead by the US following WWII, the institutions as well as The Marshall Plan, played directly into and augmented these already nationally disadvantageous tariff and trade policies.

MY SCENARIO FOR HOW WWII COULD AND SHOULD HAVE GONE
It's rather simple and straightforward really.
We let Germany crush Stalin, which could easily have happened, anyway, but for the Western Front, and the Russo Japanese non aggression pact in Asia.
We then pound Hitler almost immediately afterward. We were preparing to do that already.
We then return Germany to an enforced constitutional monarchy, all in one piece (no East Germany bugbear).
We break up the enormous Soviet (former Mongol) Empire into several, at least, constitutional monarchy despotisms, each still enormous, west, south, and east, at least.
No nuclear weapons development for either Germany or the new Russias. Enforced by the West.
Marshall Plan type temporary recovery benefits for Germany and West Russia. Middle Russia and East Russia are on their own! No post Marshall Plan booming of the non communist world.
No NATO. Kennan too thought NATO a mistake, even given the situation back then.
No World Bank, no Atlantic Charter, no Cordell Hull trade regime, no IMF, no UN, no IBDR, etc., etc. No dollar diplomacy.
No Cold War. No booming the Third World.
We pound Mao in and after 1949, because there is then no one there, in Asia, to stop us from doing so, and return the Chinese Emperor, or whoever, to the throne in The Forbidden City.

THE MENU THE HAMBURGER IMPROV
It makes the most sense to me to turn the thinking about the hamburger in a certain direction.
It is not the traditional one. Traditionally, one thought of the hamburger as more or less plain ground meat, cooked, to which is added various condiments and embellishments externally. Of course there is also the bun...
Try to think instead of a hamburger as a thing capable of an infinite variety of internal ingredients, spices, minced vegetables, herbs, sauces, fillers, etc.
Think of it, in short, as a sort of generic fried or broiled pate, or meat loaf in American English, which can be prepared for cooking in an infinite variety of ways.
It is called a hamburger patty, after all. A hamburger patty is in form a flattened unsheathed sausage.
Pate is another word for unsheathed sausage.

RE WWII AND MY FATHER
I mentioned on DKs site that my father in his 20s contracted rheumatic fever during WWII, in a military hospital 6 or 8 weeks. He worked as a typist during WWII.
After that he had a long career as a pharmacist and then executive.
About my father's other, late, contact with the federal military system, 50 or so years later.
He had smoked too much all his life, died of emphysema and surgical complications.
He had lost his mind (lack of oxygen), age 73- 74, and was a VA hospital again.
The VA was then doing experimental surgery for otherwise terminal emphysema. I am sure they had so many patients.....
My mother, not operating with a full deck, agreed to this.
My father's nurse, post op, tears rolling down his cheeks, wailed that the surgeon was such a butcher. He, not I, was rather in a position to know.
My father lived in intensive care for several weeks, his torso twice its normal size.
They found out, only by autopsy, that he had had a narrowed mitral valve, (a common and serious rheumatic fever consequence).
They said that this surprise contributed to his inability to recover from iffy experimental lung surgery, probably not noticing how he had gotten the narrowed mitral valve in the first place!
For me, looking back, that was classic.

THE OTHER INCALCULABLE BLUNDER BIGGER THAN LOSING WWII TO THE SOVIETS
Was this role below, leading to American style market globalization, quoted in an earlier post from Sir Michael Howard:

I would point out however, regarding Professor Howard's term ' imperial domination ', that the American colonies suffered nothing like imperial domination, really, nothing whatsoever comparable to that of more primitive pre industrial societies at that time.
Reading Bailyn's accounts in Ideological Origins, and The Origins of American Politics, and having been persuaded by Professor Allison's presentations on this topic, nothing like real imperial domination was ever really visited on the American colonists, except in their fevered imaginations.
Granted, they were unrepresented in Parliament, but so also were Birmingham, Sheffield, and I believe Manchester, at that time.....
As Allison pointed out, they were the most lightly burdened people by government impositions in the world, ever, while also being, on the other hand, among the most heavily benefited, I would add, before or since, in all of world history.
The British fought, and won, the Seven Years War, which Washington began, defending the colonies, among many other objectives, against both the French and the Spanish, shortly before the Colonies chose to rebel in gratitude.

I would just add that the West has most tellingly been under attack here, not either from the left, or from the right, as DK says, but rather from what has been called by, eg E J Dionne, The Vital Center, the bi partisan globalist consensus, especially in the last half century to which he refers.
Another very very important point, one I have referred to in posts, as 'the other incalculable blunder', was one Sir Michael Howard pointed out at various times, that the later decline of the West, after WWI, but especially at and after WWII, was the result of strictly American decision making.
Basically, we got rid of Western Europe's civilizational empires such as they admittedly were, starting after WWI, taking over only what we felt like having, and then singlehandedly during and after WWII, left Eastern Europe under the control of an absolutist Orthodox Civilizational, lower class, merely ostensibly socialist (fit with FDR) , dictator, Stalin.
One reason why someone like Field Marshall Montgomery, who had been in a position to know, and who (unlike Patton) survived the WWII debacle, pointed out that we had lost it to the Soviets.

RE TIPPING POINT PUTIN WARNS N KOREA SITUATION ON VERGE OF LARGE SCALE CONFLICT
Who engineered that conflict, who brought things, over a relatively long period of time, finally, to that tipping point, while other, seemingly innocent enough, things, international business as usual, global finance, etc etc, peace through ever increasing globalizing free trade, were going on strongly, and ostensibly peacefully (though not in the Middle East), for decades?
I will give you a hint: it was not N Korea. It never had much free trade.
