"... Lincoln rightly defined that conflict as the supreme test of the democratic experiment..." DK
I have a hard time thinking of The Civil War, or of Lincoln, as emblematic of a democratic ideal, or ofThe Civil War as a supreme test of democracy's greatness, of any kind.
It was not even a good example of a military conflict, including guerilla actions throughout the border states, West Virginia rolls out, many borders kept their slaves, etc.
A real supreme example of a Pig's Breakfast, and of the absence of the ascendancy of any ideals whatsoever.
Certainly The Civil War rolling out after his election is a far cry from that smacks of ordered democracy.
Its aftermath as little resembles anything democratic as did, and still do, various regimes of Middle East, African, and Asian potentates.
