This is something a little different.
Say you like ruby port. You don't want to buy the really cheap stuff, but you don't want to buy the other either.
Say tonight you are out!
What do you do?
I will tell you. You get a very nice but cheap dry red California wine.
Add a teaspoon or less of sugar to taste, and a snort of brandy or cognac and stir.
You can approximate a tawny by blending dry white and dry red, in whatever proportions you find you like, together.
You can fortify this with a little more brandy to get to what the British traditionally called once upon a time "port and brandy" a classic pub drink.
Less red in proportion to white, and less sugar, may make the most satisfying port and brandy.
