Re Citizenship, the census, and the future of the US
"...the Republican Party seems to want to use the issue to return us, in yet another way, to the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, when a large portion of the American working class did not enjoy the right to vote...." DK
"...Not only nearly the entire black population, but also much of the white working class, lacked the vote in the southern United States from the late nineteenth century until the second half of the twentieth—a situation that allowed for the rule of an oligarchy in much of the United States..." DK
"...The Union victory in the Civil War, led, first, to the abolition of slavery in the 13thamendment, then to the extension of citizenship (although not the right to vote) to all persons born in the United States, and lastly, to the end of restrictions on the right to vote based on race in the 15th amendment...." DK
This is truly the Whig Interpretation of The Civil War and reconstruction, and after.
Not only did freed, male only, negroes gain the right to vote, almost immediately, after the Civil War, 50 years before white women, either north or south, but they were put in puppet political and military control of most southern states and cities, with carpetbaggers and skalawags and Union troops.
Trust me, it wasn't about being kind, or non racist, to freed negroes, any more than Northern whites had elected Lincoln to coddle negroes. See Tocqueville, and DK posts, and mine, on Tocqueville, Democracy in America, and Lincoln, Douglas.

Universal suffrage is not a panacea.
Your post on Greenfeld, and madness since 1500, was based on human freedom radical reform liberty and equality, ending up in a universal suffrage ideal, with nationalism Whiggishly retrojected back to 1500, a Western nations wide and Western civilization wide, and civilization specific, form of madness, and argued all that.
Wilson and FDR, two Democrat heroes, not mine, occurred during this so called restricted suffrage 'oligarchy', from 1880 to 1950, as you delimited it.
FDR did, in your words re Hillary Democrats, "less than nothing" for southern or northern negroes.
But he stayed in office, just as the Radical Republicans, who had put freed negroes in charge of the South had done so, solely to stay in office, hopefully forever, not at all to coddle freed negroes, or heaven forbid, have them come North!
Washington DC is now a negro town, thanks largely to Lincoln and Radical Republicans. Thank you.
But: less liberty, less individual responsibility, less suffrage individual responsibility, more big brother, less madness. Greenfeld. One cannot have it both ways.

SUFFRAGE IS THE OPIATE OF THE LIBERAL MASSES
What else, frankly, now, is any longer left, for them, for ever and ever?
Nothing has ever been more insupportable for a man and a human society than freedom.
