Re Johnson:
"...He turned out, however, to be a fairly typical hill country white southerner, who hated both big planters and freed slaves..." DK
Johnson was also fairly typical of a hill plain or valley white Northerner, those who had elected Lincoln, but as Tocqueville had pointed out, he probably hated negroes less than the Lincoln Northerners, who hated big Southern planters, Southern negro slaves, and especially freed slaves and free negroes in the North.
"... The areas Unionism was most prominent were in the hills overlooking the west bank of the Tennessee River in the western part of the state, and in the rough mountains to the east..." Wikipedia, Tennessee In The American Civil War
It wasn't being from southern hill country that made one a white racist, in Tennessee, or anywhere else.
As I have pointed out, almost all Northerners were white racists, wherever they lived.
