Assuming he, Zakaria, actually understands (I think he does) how confused his distinction, between politics and economics, is in the first place,
his characterization of the US as having economics as its core 'strength', and politics as its core 'weakness',
is, as so much else in his work,
cynical obfuscation.
Reminds me of the nyt article, not long ago, where Kremlin investors in Facebook were quoted praising Zuckerberg's wonderful 'personality'.
Also reminds me of things in Ferguson's writings (yet another, big, free trade economics pander), such as attributing the Great Depression to Smoot-Hawley,
a thing he, of all people, is in a position to know better. Colossus, p. 285.
