RE GREATER MANCHESTER RIOTS NOW SALFORD MUST BE PROXIMATE TO THE LOWRY

Manchester, a center of the beginnings of the industrial revolution.

Old industrial town.Already at the time of the Civil War I would think it may have been in relative decline.

See also Lincoln's Letter: To the Working Men of Manchester.

Bitter competition for industrial output, with the US,
at that time.

They were also the biggest importer of cotton...........our biggest export, I believe.

Manchester also processed fine wool, perhaps from New Zealand and elsewhere, apparently, which was then shipped to Persia to make what were then called Manchester Kashan oriental carpets, very fine soft floor covering.
