I find Niman Ranch Heritage Pork Butt is a good start.
I simply roast a chunk of this with onions and sweet peppers. Deglaze and reduce with say Dry Marsala.
I also throw in while roasting a thick slice of smoked bacon!
Roast potatoes strewn around the skillet.
You can start out and season it Italian or Mediterranean style.
This type of dish is then flexible for leftovers, meaning also for other styles of quisine calling for pork, not just sandwiches:
Mexican, Chinese, Indian, etc.
You can also post cooking marinade it refridgerated in various ways or styles as I have noted in the past, with leftover various pickle juices, to approximate various salami, pate, and sausage styles. One of my favorites is sauerkraut juice. Do not add salt to the initial roast if contemplating marinading.

I suppose he could have told him if the war was over years later. We used to all come from small ethnically tightly identified groups with strict religious observation. If you read James Joyce you get the feeling of his being stifled from anearly dead culture. Right wing orthodox judaism and saudi cultur has similar effect. Times havechanged and prejudices have loosened but can never disappear. We are in a conservative phase where rots are important. Childhood memory is a great thing whether from center of politics or edge most families were strongly effected by historical occurrences. I only can trace that personally back in my irish and my wife's german/russian roots back to 1870s emiigration to USA and Russia post famine/franco prussian war. Each war/revolution in russia//England/canada threw someone in another trauma. I left America in 1989. I lost my desk job through great financial crisis but Ihave so much benefit from this change in life. Crisis brings growth. Stultifying cultural, national atmosphere teaches little. Europe is now, like America with Trump in an identity crisis. The 60s were result of post colonial, post hitlerian antiracial politics. Now they have been taken ad absurdum and are being fought. Identity is needed in dire financial and crisis times and the left insists on continues linearly forward, instead of taking a deep breath as the rest of the globe, china, russia, arabs heed their identities. The jewish identity is still strong. Hold onto it without defensiveness. Times will certainly get worse before they get better in this respect. If WWII ws focused on jews in Europe the current conflicts have Israel/arabs/iran/russia//USA. The solution to the last war was jewish statehood. Now it is drawing the region into numerous wars through jewish american support -neo cons- of proisrael policy without regard to American interest. Never Again is then an over aggressive battle cry which boomerangs, leading to similar results as before. Of course everywhere in boomer generation idealistic extremism reigns. Lets hope we can survive this crisis phase of history better than last one through cool heads, perhaps chinese and Russian(whose crisis passed in 90s).

Matthews' views, it seems to me, are much more similar to the radical abolitionists' views, on the very far left actually, whose position Lincoln ultimately represented, than to Southern white slaveholders who were on what passed for a right back then here.
It was a view (abolitionism) of the utopian and counterfactual letter of the constitution, "we hold these truths...", without an accompanying sense of its actual, cultural, and practical meaning, not to say also its long and confused philosophical history and implications, to the framers.
The only way to honestly use the constitution, to uphold or to criticize it, or to criticize or affirm those who either oppose or venerate it, is to see it within the fractured but traditional Western Civilization worldview of its framers, and to see it as founding document no less than harsh radical polemic.
Professor Kaiser is unwilling for what I guess are a variety of reason, and Matthews is unable, to do that.

Well, I enjoyed this blog post, and mostly agree.
I think it is worth looking at the world (in terms of commerce, finance, policy) as dominated by multi-nationals.
Here is a curious thing: Most people are irritated if "outsiders" attempt to influence a sovereign state election, ala Russia and the USA, or China recently in Australia.
But multinationals, which have fiduciary obligations to global shareholder bases that trump any sort of nationalism or patriotism, can pour unlimited funds not only into US political campaigns, but PR campaigns, think tanks, foundations, academia, and media.
While the term "deep state" may be a bit loaded, surely we can agree there is a "perma-state" in DC, and that it is globalist in perspective. PR from the Pentagon often refers to "global security," as easily as our forefathers advised avoiding foreign entanglements.
It is also not too much to posit that there is an rough alliance between multi-nationals and mercantilist nations, such as China, or oil companies and OPEC.
We see this in the framing of "free trade" debates in the US. In theory, there is much to support free trade. In practice, there is much to ponder, such as stagnant US wages but exploding house prices. Something about the Detroit story challenges triumphant globalism.
In this regard, Trump may be something of a maverick.
It is to be much regretted that the figurehead of an anti-globalist, or even just a questioning-globalism, US movement is Trump, and not someone earnest and reliable.

LIBERALISM AND TERROR LEAVING ASIDE THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS ON TOP
Ever since the French Revolution, in modern times, after the onset of the Age of the Democratic Revolutions and the overturning of the Old European Order, Western liberalism has resulted in instability, first in the West, tending to go over into polarizations, tending to go over into terror of the right or left, and then autocracy is returned for a time, but without the old class and religious structure which had underpinned it for centuries. The classic example is Paris in the Terror.
Since 1789, liberalism, liberalism to the point of revolution, is terrorism's twin, really.
You may say, well then, terror is liberalism's ' evil ' twin. Liberalism is good, old empires were bad, all despots bad, blah blah blah. Can't have too much of it; can't have too much of a good liberal thing...killing Louis XVI, and all the nobles, a smart liberal move.
I say rather, the question then becomes, if terror is liberalism's twin, which is the greater evil, after all, too much liberalism or terror?

Enslaving negroes not the same thing as impressing coolies under slave conditions in southern Africa (not even enough negroes for all the hard labor down there)....

dollars. And the stock market is not going to
provide protection from this kind of inflationary
storm so a lot of those dollars are going to end up
in the commodity markets, and especially in the
precious metals. When that kind of money hits a
thin market like gold, and especially silver, it
will drive gigantic gains.
Maybe he is wrong, some believe that the dollar
is actually a sort of safe haven in such
circumstances,
but I am on the other side a bet that he is
wrong...

While all Northern whites were bent on getting rid of only four million negro slaves, by attacking and conquering Southern white Americans, they all almost let 20 million Chinese immigrant coolies tumble in through California, at just about that time, from the Taiping Wars, Wars which we had started with our Christian missionary egalitarianism! Parallels Ferguson points out to great effect.
Lincoln's Immigration Act, 1864, the first and only major law in American history to encourage immigration....
After the act was implemented,
'Numerous queries were received especially from the former slave states asking permission to import Chinese laborers. In all of these instances the Bureau rejected the requests and pointed out that it considered the importation of Chinese laborers a violation of the California “Act to Protect Free White Labor Against Competition with Chinese Coolie Labor, And to Discourage the Immigration of the Chinese into the State of California,” or commonly known as the “Anti-Coolie Act of 1862” which had attracted increasing support in the nation’s capital.'
One of many tragic upshots of all this is that Lincoln's Immigration law was intended to bring in a lot of white only people to replace the freed negroes who were supposed to have been transported elsewhere by Lincoln in the first place.
If replacement labor, though not coolie labor, were imported, as Lincoln explicitly intended his law to do, then these freed negroes would of course have been rendered economically superfluous (this after all had also been part of his campaign promise), though Lincoln had no real workable plan to transport negroes at any time.
He put in place an act in 1864 to federally fund import of white only labor, amid freeing four million negroes whom he had no plan to transport, had no plan to fund removal, and for whom he was trying, and succeeding, in eliminating their economic raison d'etre.

While the demand for labor is thus increased here, tens of thousands of persons, destitute of remunerative occupation, are thronging our foreign consulates and offering to emigrate to the United States if essential, but very cheap assistance, can be afforded them. It is very easy to see that under the sharp discipline of Civil War, the nation is beginning a new life. This noble effort demands the aid and out to receive the attention of the Government.”
That part of the President’s message referring to immigration prompted Congress into action. Little more than a week after Lincoln’s message a bill to encourage and protect foreign immigrants and to make more effective the Homestead Act, which had become law on May 20, 1862, was presented in the Senate. Two weeks later Lincoln’s words on immigration were referred to a special committee of five on immigration, chaired by Elihu B. Washburne of Illinois. From there a bill to establish a formal Bureau of Immigration was introduced shortly after the New Year.
Lincoln’s law was then moved forward by Senator John Sherman of Ohio, chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. The committee shared Lincoln’s belief that the encouragement of immigration was of the highest importance and in their report stated that “labor has special wants in every department of industry; vacancies caused by recruiting calls for a large increase in foreign immigration to make up the deficiency at home. Furthermore, the South, after the war is over, will present a wide field for voluntary white labor and it must look to the immigrant for its supply.”
