On the one hand, why can't a US president ask a foreign country, any country at all, hundreds of them actually, to investigate activities of an American national in a foreign country or countries?
On the other, why would, or should, or could, a US President want to begin to go in that kind of direction, politically, legally, and or constitutionally?

BOW HUNTING
I was brought up in a sportsman's family. But it was the old tradition of country people, not aristocrats, who hunted and fished for sport but also for their food in part.
Yet, some of the old nobility also still does so. Prince Charles fishes for salmon, etc., which they actually then have cooked and eat. But he is also a farmer and husbandman it seems, with a lot of help.
I could string a double recurve hunting bow, etc etc. That was not the usual weapon.
My father was a real outdoorsman.
I read Tarzan books.

I would like to note some global and historical aspects as well.
One can say that globalization has resulted in Capital Flight, regarding most all Americans. It at first seemed an investment bonanze for all.
It has not benefited middle and lower, or even upper middle income folks so much, going forward, regardless of their race. In fact it has ruined them permanently. It has hit whites especially hard across the board only in the past few decades.
Turning to the negro white situation, globalization, for them, has been nothing less than mass enormous White Flight, by analogy to the movement to the suburbs here after WWII.
Whites here, North, West, and South, have generally shown themselves more willing to give negroes an expensive jail cell, and their job to someone else, elsewhere, anywhere else than here, than a good permanent job here.
Poor whites have been getting more of the same themselves in recent decades from the effects of globalization Capital Flight.
Domestically, it is not new, and is not limited to Southern politicians. Lincoln's own Immigration Act, enacted in 1863, during the Civil War, was designed to import whites to replace negroes rendered redundant here by his war.

Racism is the catchword nowadays. In the 1930s crisis it was class. Labor movement fought to bring about change. Middle class America was expanded greatly. The previous crisis of the 1860s was nominally about race. Now we have returned to that issue. Everyone is obsessed with heritage. Class identity is passé. Perhaps because it was thought dealt with. So all that we fought for in terms of justice in income was sacrificed in name of libertarianism or neoliberalism. Greed is good said Martin Gekko. So like the alcoholic or drug addict who got dry and just decided to party, wakes up in the same gutter he had lived in for years, America must now wake up, fight back evil of exteme capitalism and the divide of ethnic, racial and sexual hatred that comes with it as the vast majority suffer under the tricks of the post Reagan carpetbagging of America by the rich. All are exploited. Divide and conquer. TV and internet, cable TV, fascination with technology and infotainment, physical laziness plus the fight for survival (everyone is middle class, college degree so labor unions are passé). As individuals education is supposed to make us wealthy, replace collective bargaining, manufacturing was ripped out. Class warfare meant sweating blue collar types, grandpa. Not me, I got a degree, a suit. 16 hour days, no overtime pay. Idiots. The more complex society becomes the more only the very rich who control massive data banks on all sectors of society and understand complicated connections between media, education, job market, foreign trade, military can control what is happening by manipulating public opinion, lawmaking, elections to their advantage. Of course destroying your own country's middle class is killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Once the red state blue state and racial war themes ae laid to rest the bloodied antagonists will find to each other and combat the true foe. Clearly this raging against one another will get old. Dayton, Ohio massacre was a left wing antitrumpr and El Paso was a racist nationalist. Fringe elements but actually almost everyone talks, thinks like that egged on by mass media owned by rich conglomerates. I appreciate your comment, Megan, and I agree with it--as far as it goes. It seems to be awfully hard to get across what I am trying to say, even though I tried very hard to be clear. It is harder to be poor and black. But in a country that has about five times as many white people as black ones, and twice as many poor white people as black ones, the best way to HELP poor black people just might be to help ALL poor people--because we are a democracy in which all votes count equally. As it is, poor black people vote Democratic while most poor white people vote Republican. And things get worse FOR BOTH OF THEM.

FEW HISTORIANS OR PUNDITS HAVE TOUCHED THE REAL STORY OF WWII HOW IT WASN'T REALLY WON AFTER ALL
because for anyone here, either in a public position, or one requiring establishment patronage of any kind, it's rather like a tar baby!

"Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is taking flak this week for his use of the term "tar baby" while addressing a group of Iowa Republicans on July 29 in a reference to Boston's troubled Big Dig highway project. Was he offensive in doing so? The head of the NAACP, Bruce Gordon, believes the governor "made a bad choice" in using such a term, the civil-rights leader told the Boston Herald. But Romney has his defenders as well, among them a minister in the Nation of Islam. Romney's spokesman apologized on his behalf, saying the governor simply meant to refer to "a sticky situation."
In wandering into that territory, Romney has plenty of company. In May, rookie White House spokesman Tony Snow was asked about the government covertly collecting phone records. "I don't want to hug the tar baby of trying to comment on the program...," Snow replied, which brought him an instant round of static. Two years ago, TIME used the phrase, reporting that John Kerry's presidential advisers were telling him to get away from "the Iraq tar baby." Is tar baby a racist term? Like most elements of language, that depends on context. Calling the Big Dig a tar baby is a lot different than calling a person one. But sensitivity is not unwarranted. Among etymologists, a slur's validity hangs heavily on history. The concept of tar baby goes way back, according to Words@Random from Random House: "The tar baby is a form of a character widespread in African folklore. In various folktales, gum, wax or other sticky material is used to trap a person." The term itself was popularized by the 19th-century Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris, in which the character Br'er Fox makes a doll out of tar to ensnare his nemesis Br'er Rabbit. The Oxford American Dictionary defines tar baby much like Romney used it, "a difficult problem, that is only aggravated by attempts to solve it." But the term also has had racial implications. In his book Coup, John Updike says of a white woman who prefers the company of black men, "some questing chromosome within holds her sexually fast to the tar baby." The Oxford English Dictionary (but not the print version of its American counterpart) says that tar baby is a derogatory term used for "a black or a Maori." So, is use of the term today a case of insensitivity? Or is the controversy caused by political correctness gone amok? The dictionary writers point out that a word's origins and its popular perception can be divergent. Current examples include the detoxification of the words suck and slut, both of which have slipped into mainstream usage. "All words have life cycles," says Erin McKean, editor-in-chief of the Oxford American Dictionary "What's really important is not etymologically what it means, but the effect it has." Question, Re trying something 'unconventional' re jobs:
Would offshoring some economist jobs to China or India help?
If so, which jobs?
How about this, only those economists who favor less offshoring of other jobs,
should be offshored.
Or, since we can't pick winners, let's let the market decide which kinds of
economists to offshore?
Similarly for all other professions.
Makes a lot of sense really.
How about a preliminary sketch for a cartoon:
MISE EN SCENE:
Show a, how shall I put it, show a scene, say with a stultifera navis, a small sail boat, being embarked at a small pier, vast expanse of ocean stretching to the edge of page, palm trees for calming effect,
depicting only economists, Say Chicago School individuals, Fed folks, and their friends and families, favoring offshoring, being offshored.
"Offshoring" here means being marooned on a small boat drifting toward a foreign shore.
Think perhaps Gilligan's Island, but the 'professors' here are not any where near as handsome as the ones on the show, although have not yet been turned into bonobos for a future cartoon.
I just throw this in, in case there are any contemporary philosophers out there, for whom beauty versus ugliness is a compelling intellectual criterion of judgment.

He calls it redistribution, but he is talking about redistribution on a global scale, not redistribution, as it is normally discussed, in obsolete domestic economies, take from the rich and give to the poor.
No.
This redistribution is take from all rich countries' citizens (including even the super rich) and give to poor countries' citizens (and their new super rich), on an enormous, unprecedented scale.
It is called global income convergence.
He suggests a New Deal FDR type tiny band aid for this enormous, deep, and lasting economic gash in advanced Western countries' economies.
Piketty was frankly smarter than Rodrik: he wouldn't touch the economists' tar baby subject of income convergence at all!

THE MENU FAUX SMOKED SALMON PATE OR SMOKED FISH SPREAD IMPROV
You probably would never have heard of such a thing. Here it is:
You take canned health food store salmon. Drain, if in oil, use oil for something else maybe marinara sauce ingredient.
Add to canned salmon minced onion, crushed or granulated garlic, capers and some caper juice, a touch of tabasco or other hot sauce, a dash of dill pickle juice or minced dill pickle to taste; you could also do sweet pickle here.
Now for the mystery ingredient: minced cooked smoked bacon, and or some drippings, at least a tablespoon for a 12 oz can of salmon.
When you whirl this with a fork into a pate, voila, faux smoked salmon pate.
Most people who taste this will not tell the difference.
It is like what they call smoked fish spread, in which you can substitute other fish for salmon. Mackerel or sardines would be good. You could do this with leftover baked fried or broiled fish.
You could actually bake or broil fish under a layer of smoked bacon, to very good effect, call it smoked fish, remove the bacon before serving and fool your friends. Say you just heated up store bought smoked fish.
Trust me, they won't know the difference.
Many prepared foods are now spiked with what is called smoke flavor. This is just a way of doing that but not with smoke flavor.
