The end of the West is an event not just in history but also in human evolution. paraphrase of Wade, p. 238.
Wade, 2014, does not even see this as a possibility:
'From an evolutionary perspective, an imminent decline of the West seems unlikely.' p. 247
Yet, Wade does a good job of noting the good conditions (which have now changed drastically) he believes continue:
'Europe lacked the military advantage of being united...unlike China, was not under continual threat of invasion...Europe was protected on its eastern flank by the buffer states of Russia and Byzantium...Hence, unlike the Chinese, Europeans were never forced to seek or accept an autocratic regime strong enough to protect them from outsiders...' p. 233.
Ye,t he says this, in passing: 'Western societies are well adapted to present economic conditions, which they have in large measure created. In different conditions, the West's advantage might disappear.' p 248

However, this is my view:
This situation, existing from the 10th Century on, as he notes, a thousand years, long enough for the West to come to fully believe genetically and in terms of widespread social behaviors and institutions, that openness and liberalism are forever, has now come to an end. Barriers, even to migration, much less war, that once existed have fallen into chaos, both in the Middle East and across the Mediterranean. China is moving across southern Eurasia with infrastructure. They aren't doing it in order to help subject people along their routes.
It is not merely the economic equalitarianism, rule of law, or liberal openness, which have brought about its decline, but also the willingness, based on equalitarian openness, in late Western Civilization, even to ignore ethnic and racial differences of white Westerners from non Westerners, to the point that these social genetic behaviors are suicidal, when seen in confrontation with less diverse populations bent on world domination.
Migration alone, from Africa, India and Pakistan, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, without even major war, has already spelled the end of Western European civilization that existed since 1500, as Zakaria gloated, to a mostly colored Oxford audience, recently.
