Douglas spelled out the background to the parties' history to that time, and spelled out the terms of this Republican Party Conspiracy, in his opening address in the first 1858 Lincoln Douglas debate at Ottowa, claiming that Matheny had published the account Douglas described in his address.

He crashed the Democratic Party as it had existed as a nonsectional party by winning the election of 1860.
